![]() Alanya Alanya was founded as Coracesium (meaning Rock) and has a recorded history dating back to the 4th Century BC. She was an independent city that became a haven for pirates, who spread fear on the Mediterranean by seizing ships and taking women hostage during their raids. The Romans conquered the city in 67 AD, and soon after it became the place where romance blossomed for a love struck Mark Anthony who gave Corcaesium to Cleopatra as a gift. Alanya was in her prime during the rule of the Seljuk, who took the city in 1207 and renamed her Alaiyeh (The Noble). The Seljuk, and in particular Alladdin Keykabut I, played a massive part in the development of the City and not only rebuilt the majestic Fortress, but also many of the other historical sites for which Alanya has become famous, such as Alanya Castle, The Red Tower (Kizle Kule)and the Naval Shipyards (Tersane).
![]() Overlooking Alanya
Not unlike Antalya and Side, the Old Town houses most
of Alanyas historical sites and has a lovely harbour, which can be
visited in the same day. The Old Town also has many fine restaurants,
bars and shopping areas, and some excellent nightclubs. Building is going on everywhere in Alanya (similar to Spain 20 years ago) and you can pick up an apartment with a sea view for less than £40,000. New build villas start from £70,000 – a lot less than you will find in any other Mediterranean country. |
